There story starts, in 2014 there were only a few hundreds of Syrian families but not enough to get the support to keep the business Zezofon Cuisine going, so when in 2016 over 50,0000 Syrians settled to Canada, of thoughts 50,000, 11,000 thousand live near this restaurant and they got to experience a taste of their own culture, since Syrian businesses hardly existed in Toronto before this time.
History
The owners who started this business were named Husam and Saudi. Originally they were from Damascus , which is two decades from Saudi Arabia, Husam worked as a civil engineer, and and Shazanaz as a Social worker. Husam did not come to Canada as most people would as a refuge, but Husam came to study at the university of Toronto, so when they Came to Canada Husams engineer qualifications in Canada did not recognize them so in this time of them not able to go to University, the family quickly learned about Toronto being short supplied of Syrian restaurants, that’s when they decided to make the restaurant.
Ingredient brought by the immigrants Authentic Syrian ingredients are hard to find in Canada Such as the Bottle of blood red Syrian rose water, that had to be smuggled across wars that were happening from there home town since there were so many wars happening, and they use this special water because, they believe it originated with Abraham because he was a major person they had faith in the past religiously.
My Community
The significance of a food in my community is Tomato sauce. This ingredient always goes with pasta which is a staple in an italian kitchen. The reason for this is since it is homemade, it has that really strong flavour to it when it gets boiled and no other kind of tomato sauce can get this favour. This realties to my cultural identity : Because without this food, we whenever we eat pasta, we wouldn’t feel that connection that we all share because we always make tomato sauce homemade, as part of are cultural identity so without it we look at pasta as just plain, no culture, to it, and no flavour from the unique flavour homemade tomato sauce gives the food.
Food Rights & Social Justice
As the kitchen developed a project it started in Toronto in the restaurant, they gave newly arrived Syrian refugees who were temporary living in airport hotels to cook a home cook meal, and this was good for them because they got a chance to eat there cultural food they usually eat, because they didn’t get a chance to cook as much, and most likely bought cheap food only.
What can we learn about the immigration experience through food: I think though the immigrant experience thou them, is the fact that immigrants first off come for variety of reasons, just like in the article I did my research on the main reason why they came to Canada was for education, and many people go thru the struggle of their qualifications that they had from another country not be eligible in Canada. Also, this teaches me about immigrants that they live in different environments than normal and lose their culture identity because just like they have to live in the airport when they came to Canada, explained in the article this shows they how they were not able to cook there foods they would normally cook back in there home country.
