My Dine at Yang’s Chinese Cuisine

Time of visit: Saturday April 6, 2019, 6:00PM

Location: 8432 Leslie St #110

Occasion: Mother’s birthday

Description: High end Chinese restaurant with very friendly Cantonese staff and great food

People

The people who attended this dinner were mother’s aunts, cousins, siblings, my dad, and me. All of these people are Chinese and they speak Cantonese.

The people who sat around us were also Chinese and Cantonese. It is very rare to see a person who is not Chinese dine at this restaurant.

Type of Food

The type of food that is served there is very expensive. However, the premium quality of food makes up for that. The quantity that is served is also very reasonable. Food is usually served in larger portions because this restaurant is meant for groups to eat at. This restaurant is very authentic and creates their own signature dishes. The dishes that are served on the menu are dishes that are only high end food at dinner time such as Peking duck, crab, and lobster.

Type of Service

The food is ordered through wait staff. My dad is friends with a lot of the people who work there and the wait staff are very friendly and often give us free dishes from time to time. The wait staff are all comprised of Chinese people who speak Cantonese and English.

Food Presentation

The presentation of the food always seems to be the main priority for the dish because it always looks fantastic! This is because of the vibrant colours and the different patterns that they make with the food. Later in the blog, you can see the more of the photos I have taken of the food from this restaurant.

How is the Food Eaten?

The food is eaten while everyone at the table is seated formally. A dish is usually never served to an individual person. The dishes that are ordered are large and are meant to be split among everyone at the table.

The pace of consumption is very quick since I find that everyone at the table finishes their plate before I finish mine. I feel as if the main reason for Chinese dinners is for the conversation and the food is like a catalyst to bring people together, so a lot of food needs to be ordered for people to converse and have something to do while talking. Sometimes I would find myself waiting an hour after we finish eating for my parents to finish talking before we leave.

Smells

The smells that are present are very oily smells. This is because a lot of foods are fried and deep fried such as the lobster. This place by no means is healthy to eat at on a daily basis and would also make your wallet run dry. Being the not very healthy restaurant that it is, oil is used in most dishes which creates the oil smell, but the smell is also accompanied with spices, sauces, and other flavours. When you enter the restaurant, the entrance is fairly ventilated due to it being next to the door. This means that you do not smell much when you walk in, but after entering the area with the tables, you are hit with an aroma of the many foods that they serve.

Details about the Food

The food that is served is almost always hot with a few exceptions like jellyfish. There are always a wide variety of colours in the dishes because of the garnish and extra toppings put onto it. For example, the dishes came with carrots for decoration or green onions. Most of the food that was ordered were solid and hot food. The soup that was ordered (I do not remember the name exactly) was liquid and it was very hot.

Sounds

At 6:00PM, there are not many people at the restaurant because most groups of people go late at night. I definitely heard conversations however, there were very few because there were not many people. When I closed my eyes, I could mostly hear my parents talking to the other people at the table. Chinese people like to talk a lot during meals outside and are sometimes very loud. My mom’s cousin’s little daughter was even complaining to the people at the table about the noise.

Materials

I sat at a wooden table that had a tablecloth. The table had a glass platter on it that could rotate. The purpose of this is to put all of the dishes on it and when it rotates, the dishes can cycle around the table. This is very useful because it enables people to share more easily without having to pass the dish across the table.

Dishes

Birthday Bun

Birthday Bun on Plate

This bun is only served when it is somebody’s birthday. The bun is decorated with different colours such as white and pink. The shape of the bun is in the shape of a peach. It is meant to be a “longevity peach”. It is tradition to eat this on birthdays. The inside had a sweet lotus paste. The bun was also very hot.

Crab

Crab on Plate

This crab had a very crunchy coating on it. It was also very oily because it was deep fried to get the crunchiness. It was very hot when it was served.

Lobster

Lobster on Plate

The way that the lobster platter was served was very beautiful, but unfortunately I could not get a photo of it. The dish was served very hot. This was also a fried dish since the outside was fairly crunchy and a lot of flavour got into the meat where it could not if it was steamed. It tasted slightly salty which was enough to satisfy me.

Peking Duck

Peking Duck Dish

This dish is different from any other dish because it is prepared in front of you. The wait staff will cut the duck and you can add it the wrap along with cucumbers, onions, and sauce. The wait staff put the duck directly into the wrap after cutting it so that it would be less work for us since my dad was friends with them. It was very warm when it was served and the skin of the duck was very crunchy. The taste of the duck is very good on its own, but with the sweet sauce it is even better!

Conclusion

In conclusion, this restaurant is very premium meant for large groups to enjoy food together. The quality of the food is very good and I would highly recommend it to anyone who is willing to spend a lot of money. If you do choose to go, you should try the “Beef Mei Fun” (my favourite dish).

I eat at similar Chinese cuisines but after reading this blog I feel like this restaurant is more unique in its own ways and I want to try it out now.
